Phones Put Away at ‘Shabbat Block Party’
After weeks of campaigning and spreading the “Rest Is Coming” message, hundreds gathered for a special ‘Shabbat Block Party’ in Brooklyn Heights, hosted by Congregation B’nai Avraham, Chabad of Brooklyn Heights, and Kiddie Korner Preschool.
The Shabbat Block Party was a unique initiative designed to unite all those living in Downtown Brooklyn. Under the banner of “Rest Is Coming,” the event promoted Shabbat observance and encouraged people to draw themselves away from social media by removing themselves from the distractions of daily life. Instead, people would focus on their family and friends without incessant buzzing and beeping.
Those who attended enjoyed a delicious barbecue Shabbat dinner and live music by local Chassidic talent, Moshe Hecht. Women and girls were then invited to join together and light Shabbat candles, welcoming the Shabbat queen and effectively drawing the Block Party to a close.
