Shluchim Save Jewish Body from Cremation
In a dramatic unfolding of events, Chabad Shluchim in Germany and Russia were successfully able to save the body of a Jewish woman from being cremated.
Rabbi Berel Rabinowitz, Chief Rabbi and Chabad Shliach of Bad-Homburg, a city near Frankfurt, received a phone call informing him that a close relative of a Jewish family in his city passed away in Russia, and there was no one to arrange a proper Jewish burial for her.
Rabbi Rabinowitz was told that the Russian authorities planned on cremating the body, and that it would be carried out imminently.
He immediately contacted Zaka in Russia, who raced against the clock to locate the body and prevent the cremation.
The organization’s intense efforts bore fruit, and the body was turned over to the Moscow Chevra Kadisha, under the leadership of Rabbi Berel Lazar.
The woman’s body was then given a proper Jewish burial at the Beis Hachayim in Malachovka in the outskirts of Moscow.
