Last night at what is called the tallest menorah in Brooklyn, a large crowd gathered for the lighting of the menorah. Live music was played by Dovid’s one man band while parents and children danced. Hot Latkes were served and before the lighting Chanukah gifts were distributed (They were donated by 'Dovid's One Man Band').

The menorah was lit by Shmuli Backer with R. Shimon Hecht, they were lifted up in a ConEd ‘Cherry Picker’ 20ft in the air. The crowd responded amen to the brochos followed by lively singing Haneiros Halalu and dancing.

i want to wish every body a very happy and enjoiable chanukah

as i was driving one evening by Grand Army Plaza and saw the menorah i was appaled at the site where right across the road there was a chrismas tree with lights and ornaments

and on the menorah there were also the same kind of light which we all know is a very goyishe thing to do
and especially so close in proximity to the tree itself

(i heard that this was upon the request of some political parties here in brooklyn) we know that when Rabbi A. Shem Tov was in washington to light the menorah with then President J. Carter
there was request from the president that we should light all eight candles even though it is only the third night
throught the streangh of the Rebbe, Rabbi shem tov told the president that we can not do, the president then respected Rabbi shem tov for that,
guys al achas kamma vekamma a minor political figure in brooklyn

may hashem help that we should be able to stand up to our opressors and be zoche to the coming of moshiach speedily in our days

a resident of crown heights and proud of it

  • Open minded

First of all shemtov lit all 8 candles and the Rebbe was upset!
2nd there is nothing wrong in Halacha with putting lights on a menorah on the contrary it only increases the attention.
so when you do what the Rebbe wants and go on Shlichus and not waste your life in Crown heights you will have rights to give your “humble” opinion.

  • confused

y does every nice article have to have nasty comments and turn into an argument!!?? i just dont get it!!

  • just trying to be nice

Btw … the Carter Menorah Lighting is on the JEM video about Chanukah.
2nd … not every body is meant for Shlichus. Countless of people were given spesific instructions not to go on “Shlichus” but (obviously) were given their own Shlichus.
3rd … how do you know that his/her life is being “wasted”?
In keeping to the high spirit of Chanukah let us try to express our opinoins without puting others down.
    HAPPY CHANUKAH

Great job Rabbi Hecht! I was there Sunday night and it was an amazing Kiddush Hashem! May you go from strength to strength in your shlichus!
P.S. I actually really like the lights- they make the menorah all the more noticeable

  • Closed Mind

    To Openminded,

What audacity you have to condemn the people of Crown Heights on a Crown Heights website. Besides the fact that the Rebbe, whom you represent on your shlichus said in regard to CH “Kan Tziva Hashem es Habracha” – we are unlike you try to describe about our open mindedness.

Apparently, your so open minded that it has caused your senses to fall out. Did you forget about your closed mind, why are you religious, isn’t that closed minded?!

Part of being on shlichus is Ahavas Yisroel, you blatantly are lacking in that. What animosity towards CH is exhibited by individuals who claim to be Shluchim, and then which community are they so frequently visiting for recharge??? None other than Crown Heights!

from your context it seems that your a “head shlicah” with your humility to put down another’s “humble” opinion.

    Dear Shluchim,

If you consider yourselves representatives of the Rebbe who sent you on you mission to bring Jews closer to yiddishleit, then STOP your hatred to Crown Heights or we as a community will retribute it back upon you when your on our turf. Besides, there are plenty of “shluchim” who have strayed far away from the makor of their shlichus. So, next time you have a wise comment against CH, either use the method of CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms or don’t say it. because we won’t take it.

    Thanks for your openmindedness!
    humble

  • An appreciative CH Lubavitcher

I was there last night at the grand army plaza lighting with Rabbi Hecht, and I want to publicly thank him and all the work he does. The Menorah looked awesome filling the streets with a beautiful “Ruchniyisdike light”, and the atomosphere was full of chanukah spirit and “life”! ( by the way my children loved the free gifts given).
Let’s be thankful, appreciative, and PROUD of the great work of Lubavitch!

We see dots. We connect them. Everyone connects the dots of their experience a little differently than the other person. A personal choice. It’s your choice whether to connect dots to create a positive scene or a negative one.

This, of course, applies to how one chooses to absorb that which transpires in Crown Heights, whether and what lights are used to draw attention to a menora that someone else produced, and anything else mentioned above.

You can add light or darkness to the world we share. But remember, we share it.

I feel that the whole menora, not just the base, should be lit up so it can be much more obvious.
    had a great time!
thank you rabbi hecht for giving my family and I the opportunity to paticipate in the pirsumei nisa so conveniently close to home.
