Oxford’s First Jewish Mayor Is Guest of Honor
The first Jewish mayor of Oxford in almost 900 years will address a special Sabbath dinner Friday night at Oxford University’s Chabad Society.
According to Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Eli Brackman, Lord Mayor Elise Benjamin will speak about the city’s long Jewish connection that stretches all the way back to medieval times, and the pride displayed by the city’s Jewish students and community today.
“It’s an honor to host this historic event at the Chabad Society, as it helps connect the important medieval Jewish history in the city with the current revival of Jewish life in Oxford,” said Brackman, adding that Benjamin was instrumental in helping Chabad of Oxford establish the tradition of displaying a 120-foot Chanukah menorah at the center of the city each year.
The Sabbath dinner for about 100 students, faculty members, community members and local dignitaries will be hosted at the Slager Jewish Student Centre in central Oxford.
