Traveling Matzah Factory shows Kids way to Passover

When students use all five senses to learn, they’re more likely to remember a lesson. “There’s nothing better than seeing, feeling, smelling, tasting and hearing matzah bake in the oven,” said Rabbi Shmuly Gutnick, the “Rockin Rabbi” from the Chabad Youth Network.

For the fifth year in a row, Rabbi Gutnick brought his Traveling Matzah Bakery to the Hebrew Academy in Margate. In preparation for Passover (March 25th – April 2nd), the Rockin Rabbi showed Academy students how to make flour from wheat and matzah from flour. Students first separate kernels from wheat chaff, then take turns grinding kernels and sifting flour – and poking holes in matzah like insane bakers! When matzah dough is ready to go, Gutnick plays chef, putting fresh matzah in the oven and pulling cooked matzah out.

Over the course of three weeks, Gutnick visits Hebrew schools across South Florida, teaching the age-old Jewish tradition to more than 8,000 students.

“Just telling kids a story about Passover doesn’t have much impact. Show them how to make matzah from scratch and they’ll never forget it,” Gutnick told MargateNews.net.
