Historic Purim Party in South Kensington
Over 40 students gathered together for a historic Purim gathering that took place in the Imperial College Union Dining hall on the South Kensington campus.
“It was an amazing experience” said Franca Hoffmann, maths student at Imperial College and band organiser for the event.
The event, organised to celebrate the Jewish festival of Purim, was a grassroots effort led by Rabbi Mendy Loewenthal from Chabad of South Kensington. It included a Chinese food buffet prepared by 6 students, a special Megillah reading by Professor Lester Kershenbaum from the Department of Chemical Eng and a live 4 piece student band.
Imperial College is famous as one of Britons top universities. The students are used to spending many hours in deep concentration and study. “The event brought people together” said Simon Julius a student studying Aeronautics at Imperial “and was so entertaining that I didn’t want to leave”.
“I found the afternoon to be both motivational and inspirational” said Sam Gonshaw a student from the maths department.
Chabad Lubavitch UK has been doing events for students on the UK campus scene since the 1960’s and in 2008 set up a full time presence in the South Kensington area to cater for the growing needs of students.
“Chabad of South Kensington has seen major growth” said Imperial College alumnus Mr. Jack Bekhor and member of the Chabad of South Kensington advisory committee.
