UT Audience Hears Account of Bielski Brigade

After years of shunning the spotlight, Holocaust survivor Leah Bedzowki Johnson picked a forum of Jewish students at the University of Texas as one of the first public audiences to hear her tales of fighting Nazi forces and their collaborators as a member of the famed Bielski Brigade.

Johnson, whose grandson Rabbi Zev Johnson directs the Chabad-Lubavitch Jewish Student Center at the Austin school, spoke of her survival and her reflections on that period. She was spurred to talk about the subject after the release of the 2009 movie “Defiance.”

“All my people are dying off,” she explained of her decision to tackle the lecture circuit. “Soon the Bielski resistance group will be forgotten. I’m doing this so the world knows, because for so long nobody knew. We were fighting for our lives. We were saving other Jews.”
