University of the Arts student Lauren Messina will enter the juried competition run by the Chabad-Lubavitch Jewish Center for Students of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Old City Jewish Arts Center.

With the days growing colder, shorter and darker, a new Jewish center for Philadelphia art students wants to bring light and warmth to the City of Brotherly Love.

Throughout the month of December, the Chabad-Lubavitch Jewish Center for Students of the Arts will launch “Light,” a Chanukah-themed student-represented exhibition at the Old City Jewish Art Center.

Featuring student artists from as many as four area institutions, including the nation’s oldest art school and museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the exhibition will include between 20 and 30 works, said Rabbi Daniel Grodnitzky, who opened the new Chabad House last month. He asserted that the project would provide inspiration to not only students, but area residents as well.

“Chanukah teaches us that when confronted with darkness and adversity, we must not resign ourselves to it,” he explained.

Grodnitzky said the exhibition was the brainchild of Rabbi Menachem Schmidt, executive director of the Lubavitch House of Philadelphia and director of the Old City Jewish Art Center. He wanted a way to showcase aspiring Jewish artists and, at the same time, connect them with their heritage.

“This is a big deal for the students,” stated Grodnitzky. “Chabad wants to help give all kinds of opportunities for personal, spiritual and professional growth.”
