Chabad teens make Kosher Hero Sandwiches and learn the traits of a True Hero

GOSHEN, NY [CHI] — Chabad’s Teen Club, which meets with Rabbi Pesach Burston every Monday, recently enjoyed a unique program: The teens made kosher hero sandwiches and had an interactive discussion about what really makes a hero?

The teens made thair own hero sandwiches with a variety of meats, sauces, vegetables, chips and salalds.

Munching on their overstuffed sandwiches – feeding the hero within – each teen received three blank cards on which they were asked to write a quality trait that makes a hero. Among the entries were: Compassion, caring, giving, spiritual, sacrifice, good looking, wise, chutzpah, spiritual, Yankee fan, creativity, determination, inspirational, muscular, law-abiding, dedicated, honest, confident, strong, generous, talented, confident, leadership skills and the like.

In order to help the teens prioritize which qualities are most important, each of the index cards was then auctioned off. The Hero Auction did not require money – just imagination and the desire to be heroic! Each participant received $1,000 (in mock money) and, now when compelled to prioritize, the teens had to decide whether to put their money on integrity vs. good looking!

“We learned that heroism is not about super-powers but that we can all be a hero to someone in need,” said Lee Stanton, 15, of Greenwood Lake and president of the student council in George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo. “Best of all,” added Lee “is that we learn in such a fun environment!”
