Loaves of Love at UConn

Last Wednesday, Chabad, AEPhi and AEPi joined for the Loaves of Love program at UConn. Close to 60 sorority and fraternity members crowded into the small common room of the AEPi house. They rolled out the Challah dough, braided them and added some toppings. Everyone was invited to make “one to give away, and one to keep,” said Shaindel Hecht, director of Chabad at UConn. For many it was a first in Challah baking as Elana Quiroga of UConn puts it, “I had fun making challah for the first time!”

After the Challah is baked, the loaf is packed in gift bags personally designed by the students to be delivered to the seniors.

Pioneered in ’08, Loaves of Love began when Sharon Sutin from AEPhi and Shaindel Hecht, director of Chabad at UConn collaborated in the social action program to benefit the Jewish senior community in Storrs.

The amount of participants keep on growing since its creation as Sloane Krauss, AEPhi’s vice president of philanthropy puts it, “It was pretty successful.”

This year, the boys of AEPi are partnering up with the sorority for the event.

“We wanted to do an event with AEPhi to help a mutual cause,” said Alex Prager, vice president of AEPi.

AEPi hosted the baking session at their house in Husky Village, and hopes to lend out the space for the Loaves of Love program in the future.

Chabad plans to hold the Loaves of Love each month.
