The Great Torah Dedication of China

BEIJING, China [CHI] — Hundreds of Beijing residents and guests from South East Asia, the U.S., South America, and Europe celebrated the completion of China’s third Kamhin family Sefer Torah this past Sunday. The Torah which was dedicated by the Kamhin families of Hong Kong, New York, Mexico, and France was welcomed in a lavish and joyous celebration at the new Marriot Northeast hotel in Beijing’s Chaoyang District.

Festivities started on Friday evening as guests packed the popular and welcoming Chabad House of Beijing, hosted by Rabbi Shimon and Dini Freindlich. Following the beautiful Kabolas Shabbos, 150 local Jews and visitors filled a spacious tent that was specially prepared for the delectable Seudos, and celebration, that Chabad of Beijing is famous for.

Attendees at Sunday’s dedication described the Simcha as the most amazing Siyum they have ever attended . At the event, Rabbi Shimon Freundlich addressed his community and hundreds of other admirers, paying tribute to the Kamhin family’s illustrious lineage, and immeasurable role in Jewish communal life, and history.

Speaking on behalf of his family, Hong Kong businessman Mr. Isaac Kamhin applauded Freundlich’s sixteen years of determined work in Asia. He also blessed his Brother Chaim (Victor) from Mexico with health, so that he continue his philanthropy.

Shimon and Dini Freundlich have been directing Chabad operations in the Chinese capitol for nearly a decade. Kamhin, a close friend of the couple, saluted their incredible achievements. A pillar of the Far Eastern Jewish community for two decades, Kamhin highlighted Chabad’s pioneering work throughout the region led by Rabbi Mordechai and Goldie Avtzon who were handpicked by the Rebbe as Shluchim to Hong Kong. He made special reference to the three Chabad Houses, reputed school, and Beijing’s exclusive Kosher services, that the Freundlichs operate.

Addressing the diverse crowd of fur hats and satin Yarlmukas, Kamhin paid tribute to Jewish leadership. Singling out the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Kamhin spoke of the international network of Chabad Shluchim and Asia’s over twenty Chabad centers, illustrating why the Rebbe was, “Nossi Hador,” the leader of our generation.

Rabbi Mendi and Chani Raskin’s Chabad House in downtown Beijing received the new Torah. Guest packed their center for lively Hakofot and dessert following the earlier procession.

As the number of Chabad Houses across Asia continues to increase, it is expected that Kamhin Sifrei Torah will as well.
