Shluchim Perform More Brissim in Russia
SMOKENSK, Russia [CHI] — The Jewish community of Smolensk, Russia, together with their Rabbi and Rebbetzin Levi and Chana Mondshine, celebrated a historical event this Shavuos; the Bris Mila of their eight day old son Dovid. At the festive meal which took place in the shliach’s home following the bris, elder community members commented that despite their having been born in Smolensk, and living there all their lives, they never participated in a bris for a newborn baby. The community members were touched and excited by the event, and many stayed throughout the afternoon to absorb the special atmosphere.
Inspired to take advantage of the presence of Rabbi Dr. Yeshaya Shafit, the mohel from Moscow who spent Shavuos in Smolensk, five adult men made the monumental decision to undergo brissim as well. Two brissim took place on erev yom tov, two at daybreak after yom tov, before the mohel’s return to Moscow, and one man chose to return with the mohel to Moscow to have his bris there. The adults celebrated at a special seudas mitzva in the shliach’s home on the following day.

Why does this site chronically use the made up word “brissim”? It’s not a Hebrew word, nor is it a Yiddish word, nor is it an English word. Hebrew is brisos. Yiddish is brissin. English is circumcisions.
