Ohr Shalom Benefits Diabetic Jews in Perm

PERM, Russia [FJC] — Since October 2006, the Jewish community of Perm established the “Ohr Shalom” program to honor the memory of Shalom Davidovich Krepak. The objective of this program is to aid Jews who suffer from diabetes and are in need of financial assistance.

This humanitarian program is made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Leonid Krepak, the son of Shalom Krepak. Since this initiative got underway, Leonid Krepak has been an enthusiastic supporter of the local community by rendering assistance to the community on several fronts. He continues to provide funds for the purchase of food, medication, and specialized medical equipment. This aid offers a feeling of security to beneficiaries of the Ohr Shalom program.

Since the program has been in existence, the number of participants has continually grown. Ohr Shalom recently had an event involving Chief Rabbi of Perm Zalman Deutch, the community’s trustees and community members, which was hosted by the Jewish Community Center. Rabbi Deutch noted that, as with any assistance, we must always think about whom and how we can offer help. He also emphasized that we must always thank G-d for all He has given us and that, in this case, we should be thankful for the fact that the community has patrons.

Following a meeting with Rabbi Deutch, participants in the program received food parcels. The food packages are distributed quarterly. Recipients are especially delighted that the food packages they receive take into account the special dietary needs of those with diabetes.

The Jewish community of Perm is a pioneering member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
