Kosher Workshop

DONETSK, Ukraine [FJC] — The Ohr Avner Chabad Day School of Donetsk is utilizing a dynamic approach to instruction on age-old traditions of the Jewish people. Namely, schoolteachers of various grades, under the guidance of Miriam Rybalchenko and Rachel Milman, offered students the opportunity to participate in a workshop, at which they could learn more about Kashrut and kosher foods.

This new forum for learning has boosted the youth’s enthusiasm for studying their national traditions and this exercise was equally interesting to the adults engaged in the sessions.

Participants learned that in order to examine whether a food is kosher, you need to know what the requirements are for different types of food products. It is for this very reason that the workshop was set up in an interactive manner, whereby the youth could visit different ‘stations’ in the lobby of the school building – one for each separate food group (i.e. vegetables, cereals, etc.) – where they learned about the testing, handling, preparation, and storage of such foods in order that they maintain their recognition as kosher.

The Jewish Community of Donetsk – a proud member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine – is happy to see that among these youngsters, a new generation of knowledgeable and enthusiastic representatives of the Jewish people are developing. The Ohr Avner Chabad Day School of Donetsk is affiliated with the educational network sponsored by the Ohr Avner Foundation and underwritten by Lev Leviev.
