Music Fills Tallinn Synagogue

TALLINN, Estonia [FJC] — In the capital of Estonia, the Jewish community of Tallinn has launched a brand new project, which is sure to breathe additional energy into Jewish life in this former Soviet republic. Fittingly named “Jewish Composers’ Contribution to World Musical Culture”, the first concert will take place on Sunday, March 1. The event is to be hosted by the Tallinn Synagogue.

The first concert featured in this series is titled “As long as I Can Remember” and its repertoire includes a variety of Soviet songs, ballads and musical scores from movies, created by composers of Jewish origin. Among these famed creative achievers are Isaac Dunayevsky, Oscar Feltsman, Yan Frenkel, Isaac Schwartz, Veniamin Basner, and many others.

This concert is the first-ever event of this scale to have been organized by the Jewish community of Tallinn – an active member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS and Baltic Countries. This series is being carried out in honor of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel’s creation. This year alone, six concerts have already been scheduled to occur in the Tallinn Synagogue through this significant series.

The organizer and director of this project is television and radio journalist Irina Stelmakh. She is pleased to announce that the first concert will feature soloists of the Russian Philharmonic Society, Alexander Nekrasov (baritone) and Natalia Troshina (mezzo-soprano). Musical accompaniment is to be provided by Vladimir Ignatov.
