NOVOURALSK, Russia [FJC] — In the spirit of inter-ethnic accord and mutual understanding among the forty ethnic groups living in the region, the Urals city of Novouralsk hosted the ‘National Family’ Festival. On November 29th, in the city’s ‘Stroitel’ House of Culture, the festivities engaged an enthusiastic audience and just as eager performers. Representing the Jewish community of Novouralsk was the entire Nikiforov family.

The festival also featured an exhibition organized by the Jewish community, at which visitors had the chance to learn about the happenings in local Jewish life, as well as to see the works of students attending the Jewish Sunday school. There, they could also sample the national dish of gefilte fish (stuffed fish), which was prepared by Oksana Kandalovoy on behalf of the Jewish Women’s Club run by the community.

At the end of the festival, the Novouralsk City Administration presented representatives of the Jewish community of Novouralsk – a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia – with a letter of appreciation and memorable gifts.

Novouralsk is located in the Sverdlovsk Region, not far from Yekaterinburg, and has a population of 89,000. The local Jewish community is headed by Oleg Kornechug. Apart from the Family Club and Sunday School, it also operates a library, offices and a Youth Club.
