LONDON, UK — They may not have had any kosher food to eat, but Rabbi Aryeh and Devorah Sufrin were nevertheless able to make a blessing when they attended last week's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Upon seeing Queen Elizabeth II's, whose office extended the invitation to the co-directors of Chabad-Lubavitch of Ilford, England, the pair made a special blessing thanking G-d for ìgiving His glory to human beings.

The Code of Jewish Law provides for making a blessing on a host of events, from hearing thunder to seeing a scholar.

Some 8,000 people attended the July 15 Garden Party held for members of the public who work in the non-profit field. Devorah Sufrin said that she suspects their presence was in recognition of their work at Drugsline, a leading drug treatment and counseling center that Aryeh Sufrin founded in 1991.

LONDON, UK — They may not have had any kosher food to eat, but Rabbi Aryeh and Devorah Sufrin were nevertheless able to make a blessing when they attended last week’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Upon seeing Queen Elizabeth II’s, whose office extended the invitation to the co-directors of Chabad-Lubavitch of Ilford, England, the pair made a special blessing thanking G-d for ìgiving His glory to human beings.

After standing in line outside Buckingham Palace for a security check, the couple perused some of the grounds. Members of the Royal Family, including the monarch and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, circulated among the crowd.

The last time this happened was at Achashverosh’s party. The difference was that Achashverosh at least served kosher food.

Eli, don’t make a fool of yourself. It’s a clear gemoro that one should take time even from learning to see the kovod of a king — even a goyisher king, since we have no Jewish ones — so that one might get a glimmering of an idea about the kovod due to malko shel olom.

Only thing is, I’m not sure one can make the brocho on the Queen. According to many poskim the criterion of a melech is one who has the power of life and death. First of all, the UK has no death penalty. Second, the Queen is not a judge, and she can’t sentence anyone to any kind of punishment; and she can only pardon someone on the advice of the Prime Minister. So I hope the shliach asked a shayla before making a brocho with shem umalchus.

Please don’t start quoting sources here. For if you will, you will arrive to the conclusion that it is better not to go to such an event, considering what Pirke Avos has to say about befriending kings and Gmarah about bais mishte shel goyim.

There is a story about chassidim of Rebbe Rashab crying when the Czar died. When asked about why they cry about the death of an anti-Semitic king they answered: When the king was alive we were able to see with our own eyes “a glimmering of an idea about the kovod due to malko shel olom.” This is not a Gmarah.
