Chabad Honors USMC General

ALEXANDRIA, VA [CHI] — In a sold out ballroom at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington Virginia, the Jewish community celebrated the 2nd annual Gala Dinner of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington.

Marking its sixth anniversary, more then 220 friends and supporters of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington joined City and County government dignitaries to celebrate an evening in recognition of the contribution and difference the organization has made in the community since its inception.

General Robert Magnus, assistant commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, the highest ranking Jew in the U.S. Marine Corps was presented with the Freedom Military Leadership Award on behalf of the men and women of the Unites States Military. In his address, General Magnus spoke of the contribution by the Jewish community to the American military dating as far back as the 1650’s and every subsequent war. General Magnus thanked Rabbi Mordechai and Yehudis Newman, Directors of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington for the critical and monumental work they do for the community.

Mr. Phil and Szeina Lurie of Alexandria, were honored with the Heritage Award. Mr. Lurie movingly described how in a short six years, Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington, has provided the community with a Jewish renaissance and renewal, providing many inspirational and educational programs and activities for the Jewish community of Alexandria and Arlington.

Mrs. Yehudis Newman, Director of Chabad Hebrew School spoke about the critical and crucial importance of Jewish education and the significance of helping mold and nurture our children’s character at the earliest stages of life.

Dr. Peter Bernad , President of Neurology Associates, was presented with the Maimonides Physicians award. Dr. Bernard paid tribute and thanked the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson for his revolutionary contributions to world Jewry, including the establishment of over 3000 Chabad Lubavitch centers in 70 countries spanning six continents. Dr. Bernad gave a historical overview of the life and contribution of Maimonides, and quoted a manuscript of Maimonides where he describes his exhaustive daily schedule, balancing his role as physician attending to the sick, combined with his role as the leader of the Jewish community attending to their spiritual, educational and physical needs.

Mr. James Cole, President and CEO of Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington was presented with the Community Service Award. Mr. Cole in his remarks highlighted the paralleled missions of Chabad Lubavitch and the Virginia Hospital Center who are both committed to serving the greater community with unconditional love and respect.

“It is a testimony and reflection to the character of the Alexandria-Arlington community who have gathered together to create such a beautiful and energizing atmosphere of inspiration, vision and leadership to help make the world a better place” Said Rabbi Mordechai Newman, Director, Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington.

The evening concluded with a live auction of high-end Persian rugs donated by J&J Oriental Rug Gallery of Old Town Alexandria and with a performance by nationally acclaimed comedian Wayne Cotter.
