KAZAN, Russia — After a long winter, a much-awaited spring has finally sprung in the southern Russian community of Kazan. As the snow began to melt, the local Jewish community hosted a Shabbaton seminar aimed at families. The event took place at the ‘Regina’ resort home not far from the city, where participants were led by an enthusiastic group of counselors ready to assist them during the session.

Women engaged in the lighting of Shabbat candles, wishing everybody well with the words ‘Shabbat Shalom’ and children gathered round to experience their light and warmth. The gathering also featured a festive communal feast, where everyone enjoyed a delicious kosher meal home-style. Marked with interesting amusements, raffles, good company, the room exude a most welcoming atmosphere for everyone present.

On Shabbat, a series of surprises were in store for adults and children alike. Havdala seemed to come unexpectedly, bringing an end to Shabbat. The two-day retreat culminated in a show of fireworks – a brilliant ending to a memorable weekend before the families eventually made their way home again.

With a population of over one million residents, the city of Kazan is the largest city in Tatarstan. Led by Chabad Lubavitch Rabbi Yitzhok Gorelik and Chairman Alexander Velder, the Jewish community of Kazan has received wide acclaim, including from Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaeymiev. It is engaged in renovating the Jewish school building and Synagogue, having gained possession of this historic building eleven years ago. At that time, it had gone unused for religious services since its closure by Soviet authorities over 70 years ago.
