New “Childrens Home” for Jewish Kids in Ukraine
KRIVOY Rog, Ukraine – In the Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog, the Ohr Avner Chabad Day School hosted a celebration to mark the opening of a dormitory for children from impoverished families. The new institution, appropriately named “Planet of Childhood”, will accommodate 12 children for now and that number may rise in future.
The new hall of residence was built as an extension to the Jewish school, so that the children would be conveniently close to their studies and have regular access to all the facilities there as well. A second floor was added to the structure to accommodate the bedrooms and a comfortable recreation room. The home’s new director is Svetlana Burda, who has put considerable effort into making this place as cozy as possible.
The dormitory is currently open from Monday through Friday, thus allowing children to spend each weekend with their respective families. Apart from their regular school schedule, these youth will have the opportunity to participate in various activities, develop their hobbies, take part in excursions, sports and recreation. These little bonuses go a long way to make this a genuine ‘home from home’.
The Jewish community of Krivoy Rog – a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia – is grateful to Mikhail Marmer, a key community sponsor whose support made the realization of this project possible. The Ohr Avner Chabad Day School also benefits from the continued support of renowned philanthropists Lev and Olga Leviev.
