Adar Joy Helps Long Island – Turn Kirby’s into Pickles

MINEOLA, NY [CHI] — One of the most popular, informative and delicious workshops in Chabad history came to Chabad of Mineola Long Island.  The class was called “The Art of Kosher Pickle Making,” and it’s taking America by storm.

The workshop, led by Rabbi Mendel Margolin, AKA Rabbi Pickle, taught the history of the American kosher dill, how to make one’s own pickles, as well as what makes a “kosher” pickle. In fact, America was named after a pickle peddler — Amerigo Vespucci.

“A Kosher Pickle Making” is one the most creative educational programs I’ve seen lately,” says Malka Kipnes, one of the participants, “kosher is so much a part of our lives, but how much do we know about it?”

Rabbi Anchelle Perl, director of Chabad of Mineola, brought the house down in his Pre-Purim Kosher Pickle costume, followed the presentation with an in-depth discussion on the Jewish approach to eating and keeping kosher.

“Through keeping kosher we attain a level of sanctity. We remember this every time we eat. We cannot eat whatever our heart desires, because we are beyond this level of existence. Our eating is for a specific purpose and we thus ingest a specific diet.”

‘The Pickle Show’ was established by Rabbi Shmuel Marcus, director of Chabad of Cypress California, who has taken his pickle show on the road across the USA. “Its kosher fun for everyone,” adds Perl. “Who can’t like a class where you learn a little something and get to take home a jar of fresh kosher pickles?”
