Donetsk Families Mark Tu Bishvat

DONETSK, Ukraine — Not long after Jews worldwide marked their New Year, the Jewish community of Donetsk gathered to celebrate the holiday Tu Bishvat. The gala, which aimed to engage entire families, was a big hit with local residents. Gathered in the ‘Jerusalem’ Hall of the Donetsk Jewish Community Center on January 20th, the festivities involved children of all ages, their parents and grandparents.

The excitement was justified, with a rich program full of songs, friendly contests, and games. Participants enjoyed a film on the fruits of Israel that are traditional for this holiday. Following an arts and craft session, the jury was out and presented awards for the best works – everyone went home with a diploma for the ‘best’ in this or that category. The evening culminated with a concert presented by the ‘Simcha’ dance ensemble.

“I would have expected to be tired out from this very busy day,” admitted one of the grandmothers. “But instead I am leaving here full of energy and enthusiasm, which seems to be contagious judging from the reaction of the other people around me”.

The Jewish community of Donetsk – one of the two largest communities in eastern Ukraine – is a foremost member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
