PSA: Don’t Feed The Racoons

by CrownHeights.info

With just one week until Rosh Hashana, thousands of Tishrei guests are already pouring into Crown Heights. With them comes tighter living conditions and the prospect of many an outdoor celebration.

But there are other types of guests that have also joined the party in Crown Heights, and you may prefer they stay away from your home.

Multiple raccoon sightings have been reported in Crown Heights in the area of Eastern Parkway as they foraged through peoples backyards looking for food.

With Sukkos coming and the prospect of outdoors eating, residents are urged not to feed the racoons.

On NYC’s website, residents are advised against feeding them, saying “raccoons can become a nuisance if people unknowingly supply food or shelter. Raccoons are attracted by food available in gardens, pet feeders, garbage, compost, and certain plants.”

Leaving food outdoors for the animals will attract them back, proving nourishment for larger racoon families and nocturnal visits where they are not wanted.

If you have a racoon problem, the city advises calling a professional, as actions taken to remove the racoons from your property is legal in New York City.
