Free Warm Winter Coats for Crown Heights Children

After noticing quite a few children walking to school without proper winter coats, a group of Crown Heights businessmen teamed up and purchased hundreds of children’s winter coats in various sizes and styles to be distributed absolutely free of charge.

Coats will be given through the local schools via a confidential hotline. If you or someone you know needs a coat for their child please call (718) 408-1484 and leave a message with the size, gender and a call back number (no name please).

Someone will contact you with a convenient pick up location of your choice (your child’s school, a local store, etc.). Please call the hotline ASAP as supplies are limited.

maybe take off the pictures of the coats so people who wear them won’t be embarrassed to think that everyone knows what the tzedaka coats look like

    • Same thought exactly!

YES. I was thinking the Same thing.
It’s a very thoughtful idea, but you don’t want others to know “my coat is from the gemach” – they’ll never wear it!

these coats are so nice I want them for my kids nobody would know where they are from they are nicer than the average coat

  • Mitzvah lefarsem osei Mitzvah,

    There is no embarrassment.
God created this world in a way that one is giving and one is receiving that was the will of GOD.
and that is the translation of TZEDOKOH not charity but TZEDEK = JUSTICE
the one that has more money is doing justice and fulfilling the Rotzon of the Creator of the world.

Our view of the world and its Creator’s view are very different.
From our perspective, there is always a giver and a taker. Whether the merchandise be knowledge, affection, or money — somebody always seems to come out on top and someone else on the bottom. But why are there those who have and those who have not? Certainly, this is part of the Creator’s plan, so there could be kindness and giving in His world. Which means that in the Creator’s view, giver and taker are one. The taker is really giving and the giver receiving, for without this whole process the giver would be forever imprisoned within his own self. There is no higher and lower.

    • Nice explanation but

Try to explain that to a young child who’s being teased in school because his parents can’t afford a coat so he had to get a free one

    • to number 8

      This is a beautiful explanation.
Tell your child that if someone is teasing him because of a beautiful act of achdus, the teaser is the one who has real issues. There will always be people who have more (ruchnius and/or gashmius) than you. Learn to be happy with what HaShem has given you.
And as for the teaser, his parent should teach him all about the wheel of fortune.
      Signed,
A mom who benefited from gmachs years ago, and whose children are now B”H financially supporting this community.

  • CHLEAKS.COM

There’s lot’s of light (goodness and kindness) that happens in Crown Heights, one just needs to open his eyes and see it.

Unfortunately, only the negative articles get tens, if not hundreds of comments, but the good articles of Chesed hardly get any (not that it’s needed).

Thank Reb Shaya and all those who go out of their way to help anther, may you [all] go from strength to strength and from one good deed to another.

  • WOW

What a beautiful idea put into action and done in such a dignified manner! Kol Hakovod to those who are behind this!

  • LOOK, I'm a phlanthropist

What an honorable way to feed the poor.

At least its better then the Tishrei hot-dog feast outside 770.

And to the advocate of Pirsumei Nisa, it’s no mitzva to photograph of how a poor person benefits from a hand hungry for honor.

  • a great idea but!!!!!

Great idea but a shame you had to show pictures of the coats. Please have sensitivity for people feelings.

  • More coats

I have coats to donate – used but in good condition. Is there a coat gemach in CH –

  • "dan l'kaf z'chus"

By showing the coats, the recipient can leave the style of their choice when leaving a message. Obviously, the coats weren’t custom made for this specific reason and are also sold in stores. Parents on the receiving end can explain that logic to their children. Parents not receiving can show these pictures to their children and teach them sensitivity.

  • No Words

I heard several stories this Shabbos about families with children living in the most extreme poverty – right here in Crown Heights. No names were mentioned but the people sharing these stories were very caring & horrified. What can be done to help ?? We are BH active saving neshomas all around the world but there is unspeakable suffering here in our neighborhood. We know there are well-meaning local volunteer organizations that try to help, but is there anyone out there who has the business ability to put together an organization with paid staff to literally rescue local families ??

  • clothing gemach

There is a nice gemach in a basement in CH of gently used clothing they also have coats. DL Sternberg runs it. Kol hakovod to the donors of this project.

  • This is what I like to see

Someone taking action and doing what needs to be done and posting contact info for people to call. No red tape, no multiple board meetings.. just action.
