New Women’s Film: Exclusive Showing Tonight
Jewish women in New York are inspired and abuzz over the latest smash hit film for women. Sarah – One against All is based on the riveting and powerful real-life story of “Mumeh Sarah,” Mrs. Sarah Katzenellenbogen, courageous leader of the Chassidic underground escape system for Jews in post-WWII Russia.
Mumeh Sarah illegally provided many Jews with Polish passports, allowing them to successfully flee Communist Russia. Among those she helped to escape the Russian authorities was Aym HaMalchus, Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, who ultimately immigrated to the US.
Many members of Mumeh Sarah’s family participated in a showing last Sunday, including her daughter-in-law, Rebbetzin Kazen of Cleveland, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While some details of the story were dramatized for the film, all felt that the overall portrayal of her courage and Mesiras Nefesh were well represented.
The film will be shown in communities throughout the New York area and the US after the summer, but will have just one more exclusive date in a special premiere on Wednesday, June 23rd in Crown Heights at Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street. There will be two viewings, at 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. sharp, open to women and girls. Due to the dramatic and suspenseful nature of the story, it is recommended for bat mitzvah age and above.
Admission is $20, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting local charities.
This full-length, professionally produced film was made by Israeli filmmaker Tali Avrahami, whose productions are known in Israel to be among the greatest made for observant women and girls. Avrahami’s poignant film depicts the unshakeable strength and immovable religious conviction of this true heroine and that of her children, many of whose descendents live today in the Lubavitch community of Crown Heights, in Israel, in England, and around the world as Chabad shluchim.
Shot on location, in Russia, the film has moved Israeli religious and secular women alike, and the same is anticipated here. Viewers proclaim the movie “unforgettable,” and “a not-to-be-missed experience.”
Tickets will be available at the door, beginning 30 minutes before the two show times and in advance at Sell-E-Bration on Kingston Avenue. For further information, one can contact Miriam, at 347-439-5144.
