The Friendship Circle in Montreal has an opportunity to win $250,000 through the Aviva Community Fund, but they need at least 3000 votes by tomorrow to enter into the next round, and keep their chances of winning in order to grow and continue to do the amazing work that they do.

The purpose of the “Life Village” will be to provide state-of-the-art therapeutic and recreational facilities for children with special needs, including an art room, music and dance space, computer room, gymnasium, library and areas where children can develop their motor skills and get accustomed to certain sensory stimuli. Lastly, the village will also act as a full-scale, indoor mock city with life-size streets and working traffic signs, a grocery store, salon, laundromat, movie theatre, bank and a doctor’s office so the children can learn to navigate the real world. This project is based off the Ferber Kaufman LifeTown invented by the Friendship Circle in Detroit.

Having a campus will allow us to reach approximately 1000 children and families and quadruple the number of volunteers to. The village will provide a myriad of activities and programs and a place where the children can learn to become more independent.

Helping children with developmental challenges feel accepted outside of their school and home serves a great purpose. I see them smile, laugh and enjoy themselves, and it is really heart warming to witness how much of an impact we have on one another. As a volunteer for the Friendship Circle we impact a child with special needs through our friendship; however so much is also learned from our friend. Beyond our “special friends” learning valuable life skills, they have taught us to recognize how much of an imprint children with special needs can have on the lives of those who care. Our friends have taught us to be more loving, more patient, more kind and compassionate; all things our society today so desperately needs—wouldn’t you agree?
