The whole community MUST show up. It’s only the beggining of the summer when all the black teens are on the streets. Especially with the current job market, there will be many ‘street roamers’. A. I don’t know whether at that time, that we knew there were attacks against Jewish people because they were Jewish people. I’m not clear that we knew that at 2 A.M. on Monday. Prophecies of racial confrontation in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn seemed to recede in the evening drizzle Thursday, as Rabbi Josef B. Spielman and the Rev. Heron Sam got into a tan Dodge sedan and drove through the tree-lined streets.
A firebombing in February, housing squabbles and decades of racial tension in the neighborhood were put aside for at least one night as the two clergymen tried to find common ground on a patrol whose primary purpose was to ”check for potholes, broken street lights and abandoned vehicles.” The rabbi and the minister were among 60 volunteers – about 30 blacks and 30 Hasidim – enlisted for the first black-Hasidic patrol in the community, an effort community leaders and the police from the 71st Precinct hope will enhance relations between the two groups.
”It’s the first time you will see a Hasidic and a black riding in the same car together,” said Joan A. Gill, a Democratic district leader in the 43d Assembly District. ”I’m proud to see it happen.”
The new group will join about 100 volunteers who already cruise the neighborhood in private cars or the one official police car assigned to the detail, the sedan that the clergymen used. But before Thursday, the Hasidim had not participated in these police-sanctioned patrols, choosing to organize their own.
Members of the sanctioned Civilian Observation Patrol, started in 1982, patrol from 7 P.M. to 11 P.M. They have no authority to make arrests but they carry police radios to report crimes in progress.
