Hands-On Shofar Workshop at Lubavitcher Yeshiva

Just ahead of the Yomim Nora’im, the talmidim of Lubavitcher Yeshiva participated in a unique shofar factory workshop, led by Rabbi Michoel Albakerk of Tzivos Hashem.

The interactive workshop brought the mitzvah of shofar to life, as Rabbi Albakerk began by displaying a wide variety of animal horns. The boys learned the differences between kosher and non-kosher shofar, as well as the halachos that determine whether a horn can be used for the mitzvah of tekias shofar on Rosh Hashanah.

The highlight of the program was when the boys rolled up their sleeves and got to work crafting their very own shofar. Under Rabbi Albakerk’s guidance, they sanded, polished, and drilled their horns, turning them into beautiful, functional instruments they were proud to take home.

“It was amazing to see how the shofar is actually made and to do it ourselves,” said one excited talmid in Kita Zayin. “Now I understand much more about this mitzvah.”

Rabbi Albakerk emphasized the deeper meaning behind the hands-on experience: “When a child creates something with their own hands, especially something connected to a mitzvah, it leaves a lasting impression. That’s the power of experiential chinuch.”

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, the talmidim of Lubavitcher Yeshiva will enter the Yom Tov with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the mitzvah of shofar—along with a unique, handmade shofar of their own.
