Photos: Mitzvah Tank Parade Rolls into Manhattan
Today, 11 Nisaan 5772, marks the 110th birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. As every year, Chassidim gave the Rebbe a birthday present: 62 Mitzvah tank rolling through New York City, in honor of his 62 years at the helm of the Chabad movement.
The parade departed from 770, en route to New York City’s cultural and business hub – central Manhattan. The entourage of Mitzvah Tanks traveled down Eastern Parkway to Grand Army Plaza, up Flatbush Ave. and over the Manhattan bridge.
Upon arrival in Manhattan, the parade snaked up 6th Ave. to Central Park and then came back down 5th ave. – known as the ‘Canyon of Heroes’ after the many parades that flow between its towering skyscrapers.
After the parade, the Mitzvah tanks all went out to their pre-determined locations throughout the city to help Jews fulfill a Mitzvah or two.
There was Tefilin for men, Shabbos candles for women, and Matzos and brochures for the upcoming holiday of Pesach.
The parade was a huge success, and the organizers thank all those who helped make it a reality: the organizers, the Police Deptartment, the participants and even the President St. homeowners who obliged to move their cars to make room for the tanks to park.
