Mayor Lights Menorah at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza
PARK SLOPE [CHI] — A sizeable crowd gathered at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza in order to partake in the Menorah lighting ceremony sponsored by Chabad of Park Slope, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was honored with lighting the first light.
Braving the cold weather and later a torrential rain the crowd waited for the mayor for over 45 minutes and in the meantime were served jelly doughnuts and hot latkes. Children were given Chanukah presents.
A fire and lights show was put on by a talented juggler who started off juggling lighted balls, then moved on to fire batons and even breathing fire eight times marking the eight nights of Chanukah.
In attendance were Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Crown Heights Councilwoman Latita James, Commanding Officer of NYPD’s Brooklyn South Thomas Chan and Commanding Officer of the 78th Precinct Captain Michael Ameri.
