The Jewish community in Zhitomir, Ukraine, is celebrating a series of accomplishments, from the construction of a new fence protecting its local cemetery to the recent circumcisions of three boys and one 60-year-old man who decided to embrace their heritage. The community is led by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm, a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary serving the region.
His friends and teachers danced together to celebrate the special day.
The children enjoyed a festive meal together at the school. The Zhitomir school is part of a network of Ohr Avner Chabad institutions throughout the Former Soviet Union supported by philanthropist Lev Leviev.
Lev Layeled gave T-shirts to children living in the educational complex’s orphanage. Three of the boys chose to be circumcised on the same day as a 60-year-old man.
Representatives from the France-based Lev Layeled organization visited Zhitomir and handed out presents to children at the Chabad-Lubavitch run Children’s Educational Complex.
When cold temperatures and the failure of the school’s heaters led the Ministry of Health to shut its doors, local Jews united to provide new boilers. The school, which serves 160 students, promptly reopened.
Zhitomir, Ukraine’s Jewish cemetery got a new fence earlier this month.
