Photos: Eicha, Beans and Umbrellas at Oihel Nosson

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Led by Rabbi Shua Brook, mispalelim of Oihel Nosson took to the floors and recited Eicha. Some made light and enthusiastically took to beaning each other, while others brought umbrellas for protection.

I don’t know where this been mishugas comes from, but this doesn’t seem like good chinuch for children. I do know a shul is not a place for I’ll behavior, and this just doesn’t seem right.

    Grow up

  • Berel

In Sefer Haminhagim its brought down the famous story of the Ruzhiner that in his Shul they set up some kind of trap to pick people up when they were walking into shul…basically the Ruzhiner wasn’t upset aderaba he said Aibeshter if the yidden can’t handle TB“A so take it away from them. The Rebbe also spoke by a farbrengen that in Lubavitch the minhag was to throw berelach on TB”A.The bottom line is not to overdue the aveilus.
I once heard a story from a reliable source that the Rebbe came into the zal (upstairs) on TB”A in tuf shin yud and Berel Chaskind and Berel Baumgarten were both there.(B Chaskind was extremely skinny and B Baumgarten was…) The Rebbe said to them tisha baav its a minhag tzu varfen berelach.Maileh mit dem Berel (Chaskind) m’ken an eitza geben uber mit dem Berl…

  • Throwing beans...

There is an old custom to make light of this terrible day, (one way to do so is by throwing beans)and thereby saying to Hashem: If we are not properly observing this ‘festival,’ take it away!

  • JUST DOESNT UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand why they are sitting on the floor but I dont understand why they are throwing or picking up beans???!!!

  • Strange

Seems pretty strange to me to do this during Shul.

The problem is that not only are we not keeping Tisha Bav properly….

  • just curious

I heard that one should not have a picture of the Rebbe in a shul, is this true? anyone?

Recommendation: Use filberts (hazelnuts) so that there is no bal tashkis. You can then sweep them up, wash them, crack the shells and break the fast on them.

Some chochem in my shul bought barley and gave it to kids to throw. It got into my beard and the cuffs of my pants and all over my carpet as a result. There better not be a next year…….so no plans to combat the barley-berelach.
