Darchai Menachem Goes Biking

On Monday, the Darchai Menachem boys of levels of 3, 4, and 5 took full advantage of the first truly beautiful day of spring with a bike trip to Central Park. The trip was awarded to the students who reached an average score of 100 via the Yeshiva-wide point system that monitors each child’s behavioral and academic progress on a weekly basis.

The 20 students and 7 school staff members rode the 3 train to Atlantic Avenue where they transferred to the B (as in Bike, the boys will tell you) which they took all the way over the bridge to 59th Street. There they were met by the friendly staff from Bike and Roll, who were ready with just the right sized bike for each kid, and of course, helmets for safety.

The three groups headed out on an hour bike ride circling the park. Some of the boys were so super speedy that they finished it less than the allotted time. The boys were thrilled to be in the great outdoors on such a beautiful day that they vowed to come back with their families on Chol Hamoed.

“It’s wonderful to see the benefits our students receive from structured recreation. These extracurricular activities provide our educators the platform to model and foster good character traits, some of which are only possible in this type of setting.” says the Yeshiva principal, Rabbi Eyal Bension.

For one student the trip provided him with the experience to challenge himself and, in turn, to discover unique talents and abilities he did not know he had. His mother explained to the English principal, Rabbi Shmuel Slavi,n that her eleven-year-old son had never learned to ride a bicycle. “But ever since we got your note about the trip two weeks ago, he’s been practicing every day, and now he can ride perfectly!” gushed the mom proudly. “This is what Darchai Menachem is all about.”
