Costumed Revelers Were Out in Force!

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Costumed revelers were out in force on Sunday afternoon at the Woodlands Inn & Resort in Plains Township. It wasn’t Halloween, of course, but a celebration of the Jewish holiday known as Purim, put on by The Parent-Teacher Association at the United Hebrew Institute in Kingston.

“The idea of the holiday is to be very happy and rejoice,” said organizer Malka Seewald, explaining the story of Purim is about a failed scheme to eradicate the Jewish people of the Persian Empire.

Rabbi Raphael Nemetsky, of the Orthodox Synagogue in Wilkes-Barre and principal at U.H.I., said costumes are worn in a nod to the story, read from the Book of Esther, in which nothing was really as it seemed.

This year’s event supported the charity Od Yosef Chai in Israel, which provides food for orphans.
