Oholei Torah Takes Over Ranch
The hallways of Oholei Torah are abuzz. Smiling seventh and eighth graders are bustling with a newfound energy. Cosponsored by the PTA, a two day getaway at the Rocking Horse Ranch in Highland, NY, has revitalized the students in an unprecedented manner.
“Our Talmidim worked hard, and earned a great experience,” says Rabbi Sholom Goldstein, newly appointed principal of Seventh and Eighth grades. “This wasn’t just a prize trip. This event helped the children relate more positively towards school and their Rabbeim.”
Aside from enjoying Rocking Horse’s many activities, including horseback riding, skiing, snow tubing, rock climbing, a game room and more, the boys were fed nutritious, gourmet food and treated to an open, healthy snack bar. Students were inspired with a variety of interesting Shiurim provided by the Rabbeim, including power point presentations and Question and Answer sessions. The packed schedule was highlighted by a Kashrus Shiur and concert by the multitalented Rabbi Chaim Fogelman.
“My child bought a bag full of nosh for the trip,” said one parent. “It came back untouched. He told me he was so busy, he never had time to eat it.” Yet, with all the activity, the teachers and organizers ensured a structured environment, and meticulously kept to schedule. Even Ranch manager, Lou, was impressed. “In all my years here, I’ve never seen a group – Jewish or non Jewish – as perfectly behaved and scheduled.”
The attention to detail was appreciated by the students. “Wow! This feels like a hotel. They even have welcome packages,” said Mendel of the gift bags placed on each pillow, which included a monogrammed scarf sponsored by Boytique.
The trip was a culmination of a 10 week program, “Temimim.” Students had to earn their way through punctuality, good behavior and class participation. Talmidim were able to receive added points by learning Gemoro and Tanya Baal Peh, attending Shabbos Chassidus, and through the “OTEG” extracurricular program, organized and run by Rabbi Yossi Bryski.
According to Rabbi Goldstein, the added month of learning during leap years may make it more challenging for Talmidim to remain motivated. “Instead,” he affirms, “thanks to the dedication of the Rabbeim and the PTA, we pulled off an event that has refocused and reenergized the students.”
“To sum up the success of the program,” concluded one teacher, “Students are already asking for Temimim, Round Two.”
