Leah Lederman and family
I forgot that it was a leap year back then . . . If I had known, maybe one of us could have tried to come. It’s very gratifying to see friends and family in these photos. Whenever I go to the Ohel I visit Pesha Leah, and some of my daughters have taken on the minhag.
I see so many of her qualities in her family – not just Chaim Dovid and the children – but also in her relatives and mechutanim. People who are so down to earth and can make shtuss seem so hysterically funny – but never in an unpleasant or unkind way. People who never ever ever see themselves as great as they really are.
You are in our hearts –
Tragic Euphoria
Today I came out to witness the Hachnosas Sefer Torah in memory of Mrs. Pesya Leah Lapine obm, tragically killed in 1992 at the young age of 39. She was a mother and wife torn from her family in OUR community of Crown heights. I still remember the day it occurred. It was a rainy Sunday and I was a young boy on the bus coming home from school. I saw the crime scene through the bus window. Yellow police tape, blocked off streets and detectives in trench coats milling around for evidence. Representing the community were many of our leaders helping out and just showing support for the family. That shabbos, the rebbe gave a Sicha and included mention of the tragedy. All present at that farbrengen remember feeling the tragedy as if it was their own family. I remember being scared and wondering how such a thing can occur in my hometown? I could not wrap my young mind around it. Yet it happened. And today, 19 years later, there was a torah completed in her memory. The euphoria was there when I saw her son on someone’s shoulders waving his hands in pure joy. I’m sure his mother was watching with pride that her children, after all they’ve been through, wrote a sefer torah in her memory. However, tragedy was also there. Where were our leaders today? This was a community tragedy. It happened to one of ours. Does it take a whole lot to come out on an absolutely gorgeous Sunday afternoon which boasted 43 degrees? Did her family have to be wealthy or huge for people to come out today? I was disappointed.

She must have been such a special woman to have had children as special as hers.
sara chana- you look great!!
I WAS THERE THEN - I WAS THERE NOW
22 – well said! I would only add that the tragedy continues by way of machloikes. Why does it take for something so diasaterous to happen in order for people to bond together?
This Sefer Torah event should have been an all encompassing all embracing event where such a wonderful woman, through the terrible tragedy that occured, could even from above bring people together. The problem is that too many down below are so mired in their own controversy.
May her soul be a mailitz yosher and may the machloikes stop – NOW!
Would have been a nice gesture.
where was the mayor and ray kelly?

A very fine family. The girls are lovely young women, no doubt as beautiful inside as they are outside. (I don’t know the boys/men, who I am sure are fine people as well.)
May the Lapine family only make Simchas, leading to the ultimate Simcha when they are united with their dear mother, a Neshame b’Guf.
Please know that many people were not aware of this event. And yes, community leaders should have been there and should have publicized this at their expense.
FYI, the Rebbe came out for the levaya of Pesha Lea A”H, Hashem Yimkom Doma, as did the entire community. I was also there that terrible day and remember aspects of it very clearly. The Rebbe’s face- serious, serious, serious.
Thank You number 22

It was really a beautiful event and for the leaders of this community who didn’t make it. Its really you loss!!

to 22 and 28 I was at the meal for the Torah with the Master Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Jacobson who gave a passionate speech he compared the mother to Rebbe Akiva ben Yosef and said she wrote her letter in blood etc

Rabbi Osdoba was there right on time to write in a letter in the sefer torah… before the photographers were there. He wished the family well and then left. before the paparazzi could come.

How jews do it:
They kill us, our response is, after a period of mourning, we write a new Torah and go out dancing!
Yeah! With proud tears down my cheeks….
