safest place to be on labor day. all the police of nyc enjoying the air of kan tziva!

  • do not venture

towards eastern parkway, lest you get run over by a stampede of undergarments.

  • Once a year is still too much

It’s not enough this display of depravity disrupts our lives & leaves us trapped (unless we fight through hoards of half-naked revelers to take a train somewhere), you have to give us a pictorial essay of the preparations?

On the other hand, after yesterday’s insanity, I suppose 2 million people dancing in feathers is quite normal.

  • Get out of your bubble.

#4, it’s not depravity. It’s a cultural difference. In some cultures, it’s not uncommon or unholy (or sexual) to show skin, it’s just a way of life. Human beings are able to look at a human body as just that, G-d’s creation, nothing sinful, nothing sexual.

If your life is disrupted, that’s your insecurity to deal with. If you have children, you should provide an open, intelligent dialogue, explain other cultures festivities without making disparaging and inaccurate comments which would only serve to corrupt their worldview.

B”H for diversity otherwise, this world would be boring.

why is this news on crown heights.info who gives a flying leap about this It is unfortunate that this parade still exists but it is not newsworthy for our community a bunch of animals converge on E.p? big deal. The zookeepers handle it & we have nothing to do with it.You couldn’t publish anything better?

  • not really enjoying

I live on eastern parkway and was impressed how mellow and peaceful this years parade was I walked across eastern parkway several times today and not only did I not get any bad comments but all I saw where smiles and friendly faces and ppl saying hello to me!!!!

  • to 6

I never said it is depravity or sinful, I think that it is there right, however it obviously is a parade of people half dressed so I wouldn’t want myself or my children to be have to walk through it. it is what it is.

  • crownheights

crown heights does not belong to any one sect. did you not meet us there first? and to commenter calling us animals, try some peace and love

  • Out of Control weekend

#6 – Is it cultural when you hear gunshots at all hours for the two days leading up to the parade? It it cultural that the entire area is covered in one big marijuana smoke cloud for days?

Is it cultural when the cops are arresting tons of people for carrying gun, knives and drugs?

How about setting up speakers the size of a small skyscraper on every block, and blasting them for 48 hours straight in a drunken out of control party and then assaulting the police that come to calm the crowd?

How many people were shot and stabbed in the area over the weekend? 15? 20? How many beaten? How many robbed?

    To #6:
There is a reason there is a boundary between Jews and non-Jews. Ever heard of intermarriage? Ever heard of pas yisrael and cholov yisrael, not to mention bishul yisrael- all created to stop intermarriage?

No, I am not going to sit my toddlers down and explain to them that Jamaicans like to dance naked in the streets, urinate in public, get felt up by strange men, and occaisionally stab and/or shoot each other (which happens at almost every parade.) Why should I? What will that help in building a Jewish home??

  • Moishe Kapoyer

…but it’s ok to burn khometz and kill chickens on the Parkway? I saw plenty of guys in black hats and coats watching pretty intently the goings on yesterday.

  • cma

Wow. From the pics I can see nobody came this year except for police and lubavs…

The Labor Day Parade is now officially ours!!!

  • D.H.

#20 Shut the hell up, I am Jamaican. I am educated, graduated from Penn state, went on to UC Berkley and currently in a PhD program at USC. I grew up in this neighborhood and though I haven’t been back in a while, due to my educational endeavors, I would like to clear up your OBVIOUS ignorance. First and foremost, the parade isn’t a Jamaica Day parade, its a west indian day parade, meaning, the entire Caribbean is taking part. However, you seem to think we are one in the same, and everyone with an accent, half naked and black, is JAMAICAN! This is not true. Please stop taking television, magazines and the internet as your global history resource. Fortunately, my eyes are able to see far beyond the yarmulke sitting on your head, the black shirley temples and top hat and know that when I see a mass of white people, you all aren’t Irish! . So please refrain from making rash statements, because contrary to what you believe We aren’t all the same.

As for the parade, get over it. Its one day, and yes theres lots of police, but when you all congregate on eastern parkway, and have a heavy police presence, for you its protection and security from harm, but when they are around us, we are seen as unruly. You celebrate your culture without interruption, let us do the same. God forbid someone else thought their cultures was as important as yours. I advice you to stay in your lane while we mark on down the road!

    -Thanks.

Ms. H soon to be Dr. H

Is cultural for 14 year old boys to get drunk and wander the streets? To blast music every night until 4 in the morning as we dance in a wild crowd of people?
Yet we’ll do it this sukkos

  • sassykrissy

The people that behave crazy and hurt people are the ones who knows nothing about the culture and is not educated about what carnival is all about. Yeah, and there are the ones who drink excessively resulting into nothing but craziness, still thats no excuse for their behavior. There are half naked people in the parade thats ok, nudity is not a sin. In Brazil Carnival the nakedness is worse. I participated in the parade and there was no one gropping or touching me inappropriately. We are all not like that many of us are civilized people who just like to have some fun dancing and enjoying the music.

You say “in some cultures” as if that makes it OK, as if all cultures are equally valid. Nothing could be more false or more evil. Face the facts and accept that some cultures are worthless and depraved, and have no right to exist. That is FUNDAMENTAL to the Torah; if you do not accept it then you are not a Jew and certainly not a Lubavitcher.

I really hope this gallery is satire.
There is another great Jewish tradition which includes fighting for the civil rights of all people and cultivating a social conscience, of truly being a “light upon the nations.” This article and most of its comments sure ain’t that.

  • Lawless

The problem is not the parade itself, it’s the utter lawlessness that comes with it from Friday night until very early Tuesday morning in just about every block from Atlantic Avenue down to Farragut Road.

lol…I like your comment Dr H…I agree with you! I too use to be ignorant about the parade and culture. I didn’t quite understand the Culture..Now that I am older and realize the wealth in experiencing different cultures, I love the parade. It is so Brooklyn. I actually envy the women that parade around in there skimpy outfits. It looks so liberating and free. I grew up in Crown Heights. The Jewish people of Crown Heights need to embrace the differences, it is what makes Crown Heights special. I have grown to appreciate them as well! For G-D’s sake can we all just get along! Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Caribbean, Orthodox, American, Young or Old..We are all G-d’s children…Leave the judging to Allah, Jehovah, God Almighty! Try it! It feels really good! I dare you!

  • GREAT PARADE

I’m Happy that for some years already there were no reported deaths or violence at the parade.
This way its a great parade and I’m very happy to see tens of thousands rejoice.
(Their Religion allowes them to dress like that).
Although I was stuck 45 minutes in traffic – I arranged my schedule to leave an hour early, and besides – that’s not the fault of the parade – it the fault of traffic organizers

  • to my previouse comment

BTW the traffic this year was MUCH better than a few years ago with police at almost every intersection moving the traffic

  • It was bad

“I’m Happy that for some years already there were no reported deaths or violence at the parade.”

Maybe not on the parade route, but there were lots of people shot and stabbed all over the area between Friday and Tuesday that were attending parties related to the parade.

That Sunday night before the parade is nuts. Lots of gunfire. You can hear it all night. The streets are filled with people smoking drugs and you can hear loud music all night.

How about: Tada!! Live and let live!!! You respect my ways, I respect yours. We all live a happy life. There is no reason in the world that we cant do so peacefully. If you dont want your children around certain influences- keep them in!! Its just one day. When we have our Sukkot celebration- we take up loads of space for several nights. We dont have to enjoy or join in each others festivities. JUST RESPECT!!!
