Over 200 community members, business leaders and elected officials attended the inaugural benefit for the Jewish Community Center of Long Island City/Astoria at the Water’s Edge restaurant on 44th Drive in Long Island City on February 18th, 2010.

Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall attended and delivered a proclamation declaring February 18th, 2010, “Chabad of Long Island City Day.” City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and a representative from the office of Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan also attended.

Arthur Leon and Raphy Benaim, two long-time supporters of Jewish community life in Western Queens were honored at the event.

Arthur Leon received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his nearly 50 years of service as president of the Adath Israel Center on 36th Street in Long Island City. Mr. Leon, is the Principal of Leon, Tarlowe & Saper. In his mid-eighties, he still rides the subway to work in midtown Manhattan every day.

The evening included live entertainment from Israeli musician Yoel Sharabi, a full buffet, and a live auction and a special video presentation.

“We had a great time, the food was excellent and it was nice to be a part of this special evening. The video was a really nice touch and it reminds us how fortunate we are to have Chabad right in our neighborhood,” said Bennett Fins of Long Island City.

“I am proud to be part of this community,” said Elisheva Grossman, a real estate broker and new arrival to Long Island City.
