Anonymous Holocaust Survivor Donates Torah to Mtl’ Shul

MONTREAL Canada [CHI] — A new Sefer Torah was completed and dedicated this past Sunday in Montreal, Canada. Many members of the community came to the home of Rabbi Moshe Stern, Rov of Cong. Tzeirai Dath Vedath Shul, when the final letters were filled in, and from there a joyous procession went to the Shul.

Cong. Tzeirai Dath Vedath was established close to 70 years ago by Holocaust survivors who chose to settle in Montreal, and together with the little money they had left they established their own Shul. Today, many members of the Lubavitch community daven there after most of the original founding congregants passed away.

A number of months ago an old timer, who was a holocaust survivor himself, passed through the Shul and was drawn in, he said that “the Shul reminded him of the old Shtetle Shul.” This man lost everything in the holocaust, and when he came to Canada he remarried, and never had children.

The man offered to donate a new Sefer Torah to the Shul, with one condition, he was to remain anonymous. The torah was dedicated in memory of all the Jewish children that were murdered in the holocaust.

The torah was dedicated on Sunday, the 17th of Elul which was when World War II began 70 years ago. And on this day a Polish orphanage was hit in a bombardment and many Jewish children staying there were killed.

The event was organized by Rabbi Meir Mann.
