Photo Gallery: Exotic and Bizarre Fruits for Tu Bishvat!

Names like Rambutans and Pepino Melons aren’t names of fruits you would often as you would an Apple or Orange but on Tu Bishvat we search for a ‘new’ fruit so that we can make a ‘shehecheyanu’ blessing on it in honor of the day, which is the birthday of the trees.

“Buddha’s Hand” is just a funny-looking (but kosher) esrog. And many of the things you listed are not ho’etz, so what connection do they have to Tu Bishvat?

That yellow octopus is the esrog. And yes, it’s kosher; that’s what the Jews in the south of India used for centuries. It’s exactly the same species as a normal esrog, it just grows funny.

Mushky, the question is about the many fruit mentioned that aren’t ha’etz; what are they doing in this story?

to milhouse i dont know were u are getting your info but you are wrong on both counts the rambam says that this particuler esrog is not kosher for the arba minim, and dare i say that all the fruit pictured are haeitz

mr greens, where is this Rambam? The Rambam never heard of this esrog, so how could he pasken on it? The Jews in the south of India did use them, and the rabbonim they asked paskened that it was kosher.

And no, many of the fruits listed are NOT ho’etz: horned melon, cactus pear, and pepino melon.
