URGENT: NYC To Sell Off 30,000 Property Liens For Unpaid Water, Sewer, and Property Taxes, More Than 40 Crown Heights Homes On The List
by CrownHeights.info
If you have not paid your property tax, water, or sewer bills to NYC over the last five years, this may mean the start of losing your home.
On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the city is scheduled to sell over 30,000 liens on homes in New York City, its way of collecting on delinquent tax, water, sewer or emergency repair bills. The liens will be sold to an authorized buyer, usually a trust, which typically begins charging fees and interest on any unpaid liens. These sales have historically led to home foreclosures.
The practice of lien sales has been in place since the Giuliani administration, but will be be the first time such sales have taken place since the COVID-19 pandemic.
For homeowners, this means that the last day for property owners to remove their properties from the lien sale is now June 2, having been pushed off from the original May 19th.
“This extension gives New Yorkers more time to take action and get help,” said Department of Finance Commissioner Preston Niblack. “We’re doing everything we can to connect property owners with payment options and support services to help them avoid the lien sale and stay in their homes. If you or someone you know is at risk, now is the time to reach out.”
Property owners can avoid the lien sale by paying what they owe, enrolling in a payment plan, submitting an Easy Exit application, applying for a property tax exemption, or submitting a probate application. For more information about how to remove your property from the lien sale and to access resources, visit www.nyc.gov/liensale.

I was on this list because of the water bill but then the city charged it to my mortgage company, who paid it and sent me the bill (via escrow payments)

The article is a public service since there are some individuals who may not be aware that they are delinquent in property taxes. Delinquent property taxes which become tax liens must wait ( usually 1 yr ) before beginning a foreclosure process
