Got Tickets? You Might Lose Your Car

A new law was signed by New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio Wednesday, that allows the city to impound the vehicle of people who get a large amount of traffic camera tickets.

The new law sets the number of tickets at five camera-issued red light tickets or 15 camera-issued speeding tickets in a 12-month period, when the city can take your car.

“We are putting all drivers on notice that if you behave recklessly behind the wheel, there will be real consequences,” said de Blasio at the signing ceremony.

The law includes a driver safety course overseen by the Department of Transportation as a method of getting back your vehicle.

There is still plenty of time before the law will take effect on February 26th, 2021, with tickets accumulating only if they were incurred after October 26th of this year.
