911 Overwhelmed with Calls Monday Night

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the NYC 911 system received 10,000 calls per half hour on Monday night. A quick math suggests that this is 333.3 calls per minute, which in turn means 5.5 calls per second!
Context: In a typical day, the 911 system in NYC receives 1,000 calls per half hour; which is 33 calls per minute which in turn is somewhat more than one call per every two seconds.
Bottom Line: Calls Monday Night came in ten-fold the regular amount.
