Towing Agents Sue NYPD for Enforcing Quotas

Four city traffic-enforcement agents, with help from their union, have filed a suit against the city and the NYPD claiming they are being penalized if they don’t meet a 3-4 vehicle quota per shift.

The New York Daily News reports that court documents say the tow truck operators charge they are being threatened with restrictions on overtime and meal breaks, and in some cases have been threatened with poor evaluations, even termination.

The suit, filed Thursday in Manhattan Supreme Court, states that discretionary power operators ordinarily have when determining whether or not to tow has been stripped, and that pressure to bring in at least 3 cars per shift has intensified.

Joseph Puleo, president of Local 983 said, “No, they don’t have discretion. My members are being pressured to tow vehicles they normally wouldn’t tow in order to satisfy the agency.”

old story – this has been going on for years. the sick thing is watching the tow trucks line up 10 minutes before the no parking time comes into effect (i.e. 4-6 pm – so they are there at 3:50), and back right up to a car that is parked legally. at the stroke of 4, or even earlier, they start hooking up the car.

Good for them! WIth all the racial and crime problems in Crown Heights, the NYPD should be spending its money and resources in keeping the community safe, not pulling in more money for the city.
