Brooklyn Sees Lowest Murder Rate Since 1963
Over 100 firearms were surrendered to the NYPD during the year’s first gun buy-back program at the Bedford Central Presbyterian Church in Crown Heights on Saturday.
Brooklyn residents turned over a total of 108 guns at the church, located on Nostrand Avenue and Dean Street. Of the guns, 61 were revolvers, 29 were semi-automatics, three were rifles, two were shotguns and 13 were other kinds of firearms. Seven were loaded.
The NYPD Gun Buy-Back program, which has been running since 2008, has helped remove 7,600 weapons from the streets.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Brooklyn is now safer, and he has statistics to prove it.
Commissioner Kelly, at the Dean Street church, said Brooklyn has seen the lowest murder rate since 1963, with a count of 195.
In the 77th Precinct, which covers Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Weeksville, there were 10 murders in 2011.
In the Prospect Heights area, 2011 murders included that of Deloris Gillespie, who was set on fire in her Underhill Apartment elevator last month, a shootout at Franklin Avenue at Park Place that left a 29-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman dead on Sept. 5 and the shooting of a Church minister of music on Sterling Place at Franklin Avenue on March 13.
“Murders in Brooklyn fell to below 200, to 195, for the first time in nearly a half-century in part because of concerted efforts to get guns off the streets in partnerships like these,” Commissioner Kelly stated on Saturday after speaking with Brooklynites and policemen at the Crown Heights church.
Kelly said that the program had “critical support from District Attorney Charles Hynes, the Brooklyn clergy and borough residents.”

Ha! If you believe that I have a knife and bridge to sell you. What is not recorded did not happen. Statistics do not make facts.
As for the bought guns-they may just want money for an upgrade is weapons. Those that will commit violent crimes will still do that, so those with guns for protection still have use for them. Don’t be lulled by these ‘facts’ and promises.

not true my brother was murdered and robbed in the store he worked at in crown heights on e94th and rutlan rd sept 30,2011 the homicide detectives are too busy find his killer..they said they had around 37 murders for that month alone and for that precinct..god only know the amount of murders in the devils playground,,,RIP KARAM EL BRIEMI 22YRS
