New data show the state’s decade-long decline in major crimes slowed last year as rapes, robberies and assaults increased in New York City, burglaries rose elsewhere and murders statewide were up 10 percent to 861.

Motor vehicle thefts dropped 6.5 percent to just more than 20,000 while larcenies declined almost 1 percent to about 288,000 across New York.

Overall, the total of so-called index crimes was marginally lower than the previous year at almost 449,000 but about 20 percent below 2001 totals.

Violent crimes, up about 1 percent from 2009, were still 23 percent lower than a decade earlier even as the state population inched up.

DCJS spokesman John Caher says preliminary data from this winter show a further drop.
