Coney Island’s Cyclone Opens Just in Time for Chol Hamoed

Another season of thrills officially got underway Saturday in Coney Island.

Luna Park and the Cyclone roller coaster are now open.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz christened the world famous coaster with the traditional bottle of egg cream.

Despite the less than perfect weather, die-hards said they wanted to be the first to ride the Cyclone this year.

“The adrenaline is flowing, no problem with the weather,” said one Cyclone enthusiast. “It’s all mind over matter. I have no mind, so it does not matter.”

“Well I rode this thing over a thousand times, probably, but I’m very excited,” said another.

As in years past, the first 100 people got to ride the legendary roller coaster for free.

Meantime, Luna Park operators say they are looking forward to a busy season.

“Everybody on the New York, every kind of people can come here, have fun: nice food, nice show. We come to provide a nice environment for them. A place to go when you want to have good time,” said Central Amusement International CEO Alberto Zamperla.

Luna Park opened last year as part of the effort to revitalize Coney Island. The park features 19 rides, with four more slated to open this season.

The city said it drew more than 400,000 people last summer — the most visitors to a Coney Island amusement park in nearly 50 years.
