Lunar Eclipse Set to Darken Night Sky
A rare total lunar eclipse is set to darken the night sky on Tuesday.
The celestial event is expected to begin after 1 a.m. EST on Dec. 21, and will continue for more than three hours.
The moon won’t go black, but will instead turn a coppery red when completely blocked from the sun’s rays by the Earth, the result of sunlight bouncing off the atmosphere.
There have been several total eclipses of the moon in the last decade, but this would be the first time in centuries one has occurred on the winter solstice.
According to NASA, the best time to see the event will be at 3:17 a.m. EST, when the moon is in its deepest stage of the eclipse and will be a deep red.
Local weather reports for New York City suggest it will be partly cloudy, but conditions should be clear enough to witness the eclipse.
