New York City Sales Tax Increases to 8.875%

NEW YORK [NY1] — New Yorkers are now paying a little extra at the cash register.

The city sales tax hike went into effect Saturday, bumping the burden up half a percentage point, to 8.875 percent.

That amounts to an extra 50 cents tax on every $100 purchase.

It’s the first permanent raise in the tax in more than 35 years.

The mayor and the City Council introduced the plan earlier this year to battle the city’s financial woes.

Lawmakers are hoping to raise $950 million a year in additional revenue from the measure.

Great! I was going shopping tomorrow. We just continue to suffer in this economy, don’t we?

  • Mayor Bloomberg

I hope you don’t mind. I know everyone has tons of money to throw around, so why give some of it to me? Anyway, cant wait to get your vote in November, so I can keep on taxing you for another 4 years (and then I’ll just extent tern limits by another 4 years).

whe cares about a stuped 1/2 percent.
I care more about the police, roads, safety, parking tickets corrupt city agents that dont do their jobs …..

Are much more important then a few dollars a year.

  • Re. Vote

Police are always where you dont need them, our roads are full of potholes, and none of Bloomberg’s policies made Brooklyn any safer,(he just continued Giuliani’s policies, any mayor would have to be an idiot to change that)parking tickets have gone up just so Bloomberg can fill his pockets, and city agents, and police are as abusive and as condescending towards residents as ever. It’s time Bloomberg went home.
