Council Takes Up Bill Requiring Agents to Photograph Parking Offenses
NEW YORK, NY — Council Members James Vacca (D-Bronx) and Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) will hold hearings today in City Council Chambers at 11:00 AM to advocate for a bill that would require traffic enforcement agents to photograph parking violations and attach a copy of the photograph to the each ticket. The bill, Intro 886-A, is intended to end the he-said-she-said battles that clog our traffic courts and waste motorists’ time. It is one of four bills under consideration at a hearing of the Transportation Committee, chaired by Council Member John Liu, at Council Chambers.
Specifically, Intro 886-A would require the city to gradually upgrade the handheld devices that agents use to dispense tickets so that they are equipped with cameras. All agents using the upgraded devices would then be required to attach photographic evidence to any ticket issued for stopping, standing, or parking in bus stops, in handicapped zones, in bicycle lanes, in crosswalks, on sidewalks, closer than 15 feet to a fire hydrant, on the roadway side of a vehicle stopped, standing, or parked at the curb, or for failure to display a required document or license plate.
Similar technology is already in use in Chicago. Testifying on behalf of the city will be representatives of the New York City Police Department, which oversees traffic agents, and the New York City Department of Transportation, which formulates parking rules.
That-s the way to do it!
I have been to other coutries and the meter maids all have a camera installled on their ticketing device. When they issue a summons it is accompanied by picture evidence. This prevents the officers from writing so many ilegal tickets as we are accustomed to here in NYC. It laso gives the drivers the opportunity to defend themselves with legitimate evidence if they have any to counter the ticket according to the real life pics of the alleged violation.
Unequal Justice
Maybe justice will finally be done. However, this won’t help all those cars that the Police Dept overlook who are doubleparked on Empire Blvd and Clove Rd and on the sidewalks by the church. Go by there on any given day when it’s church time, especially in the evening and there are at least 20 cars with NO tickets on them! If this was a shul, you can guarantee we would not get away with it. What’s gonna be when they finish redoing Empire Blvd. So Unfair!!! Wish someone would speak up to the proper authority who will do something once and for all!!
They never give up
I know people in CH that even with pictures and eye witness testimony against them they would still fight it because they are lazy have nothing else to do except to disobey the law. If it means they have to park a 1/2 block away and walk it’s too far.
its better for the police
maybe some people will begin to respect the police when they stop getting fake tickets
